Matt did a great job of describing everything that happened at Stout Fest 2008 and all the great beers that we sampled. However, I feel the need to express my dissatisfaction with one beer he failed to mention. This is one of the worst beers I've ever had, made by a brewer who also made one of the best beers at Stout Fest. The brewer is Harrison's, a small brewpub in Orland Park. They nailed it with their Black Diamond Stout, but oh man did they fall short with their Butterscotch Stout.
I probably shouldn't even tried this beer in the first place. The curiosity that led me to initially try Youngs Double Chocolate Stout (one of the only beers I wouldn't finish) is the same curiosity that told me "hmm, butterscotch and beer...that might be a good idea". This beer is like drinking pure butterscotch with a drop of water added. It coats your throat going down and will stay there for at least a half hour. This was the 2nd beer I tried at Stout Fest, and unfortunately the butterscotch taste wouldn't go away until beer #5. Additionally, I had to wash my glass a couple of times before the butterscotch aroma went away.
Not recommended, avoid like the black plague.

I kind of felt that they brought out the novelty beer because they were so confident in the Black Diamond. I don't think I would have even tried this novelty if their other beer there wasn't so good.
To be fair, I kinda hate butterscotch and don't know why I drank it in the first place. I didn't like it either, but it didn't make me angry! Ha ha!
See, I don't mind butterscotch, but I guess I don't like it enough to drink a glass of it.
