Clipper City Heavy Seas Peg Leg Stout

I am a sucker for labels, and Peg Leg Stout has a great label. I suppose I am also a fan of labels with sharks on them as well, which has made for some strange purchases over the years.

Heavy Seas has a fairly plain, lightly carbonated stout here that is obviously designed around easy consumption. This is not a 'sniffer beer'. You will not be astounded by its complexity or anything of the sort. Great drinker though and a nice way to top off a night after drinking some heavier stouts, as I found out over the weekend. There is a very miniscule amount of chocolate in this beer, but you almost had to concentrate on it to taste it. Close your eyes and wish for chocolate!

The impression I came away with is that Peg Leg Stout was an afterthought at Clipper City. Something along the lines of 'Oh, we make all these other beers, might as well make a stout!'. That sounds particularly damning for a beer that was far from bad, just not very original. I bet the Heavy Seas line has a really great flagship beer (ha?), but it isn't the Peg Leg.

Awesome label though, I wish my picture did it justice, but its hard to get lighting right when your apartment is a dungeon. I kind of want to steam it off and slap it in some kind of scrapbook, but that might be a little too much.

Of the 3 stouts we had I felt this one was the weakest of the group. It was good but almost didn't seem like a stout to me.

I had their hop3 beer and it was easily one of the better beers i have had in a long time. I know this has nothing to do with the stout but I had to recommend.

Dude I love recommendations! I will add that to my mental list. I had a feeling that Clipper City was just not a brewery that specialized in stouts.
